The South Loop is a neighborhood that spans across the Loop and the Near South Side community areas. It was the original home of Chicago’s elite before they moved on to settle the Gold Coast. The part of the neighborhood in the Loop is generally bounded by Ida B. Wells Drive on the north, the lake on the east, Roosevelt Road on the south and the Chicago River on the west.
In the Near South Side community area, the neighborhood is generally bounded by Roosevelt Road on the north, the lake on the east, 24th Street on the south (next to I-55 highway), and I-94 highway on the west. Much of the revitalization of this neighborhood started back in the 1980’s, with large scale residential development coming along in the mid 1990’s.
The Firehouse restaurant is just that, a former firehouse converted into a fine dining restaurant. There are dozens of fine dining establishments throughout the neighborhood.
There are at least two major grocery chains with stores in the neighborhood. From fresh squeezed juices, to smoothies, or healthy diet options, there are many options available to locals.
Luxury apartments, condominiums and townhouses are the primary residences found in the South Loop.
Single family detached homes are at a premium here, just like in the other neighborhoods near downtown. Expect to find prices ranging from the mid six figures to the low seven figures.
Downtown area residents love open space. Three main uses of that space are for exercise, playgrounds, or pets.
The South Loop has unique access to the Museum Campus. The Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum are world renowned destinations. The city’s fondness for cycling resulted in Divvy bike rental stations being installed at convenient locations around the neighborhood.
The neighborhood is one of the larger ones in the city that has big box stores and boutique retailers. The Roosevelt Collection mall boasts a movie theater, massage spa, clothiers and restaurants.
The Chicago River forms a picturesque border to the South Loop. There are private companies who will rent kayaks and canoes during the warm weather months.
There are options for world class education as there are private schools that will cater to developing minds from preschool through high school.
There are a variety of schools to choose from in the South Loop. Parents can opt for public schools, religious schools or other private schools with an emphasis on advanced learning.
